Emergency situations

• Toothache: strong, throbbing pain that stops you sleeping
• Abscess or swelling of the gum, cheek or face
• A broken, cracked or knocked-out tooth after a blow
• A crown or denture that has come off, a filling that has fallen out
• Bleeding that continues after an extraction

While waiting for your appointment

• Rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm water
• Apply cold to the cheek (an ice pack wrapped in a cloth), never heat
• Do not place aspirin directly on the gum
• If a whole tooth has come out, keep it in milk or saliva without touching the root, and come quickly

Do not delay

Swelling that spreads, a fever, difficulty opening your mouth, swallowing or breathing are warning signs: go to a hospital emergency department without waiting.
